Do you think of sunshine when you think of the colour Yellow? I think of good cheer, rain falling on sunflowers, beach days, dancing in a field of yellow daisies, wild and free.
Yellow recalls feelings of happiness, optimism, creativity. It mimics bright lights and reminds us of the sun shining bright. It gives hope, indicating good cheer, enthusiasm and high energy.
As I get reacquainted with my right side of my brain and learn to embrace my creative side by immersing myself in artistic ventures, I particularly enjoy the warm effect that the colour yellow elicits, arousing mental stimulation that energizes the creative process.
Yellow is intense, abrasive even, and can fatigue the eye of the beholder; hence the advise to use in moderation. I occasionally pick up a yellow piece, like this simple V-neck t-shirt, very much in moderation. Indeed it is cheerful, yet too much of it can be aggressive.
Just the other day while dropping the young man at campus for the new semester, we had an impromptu photoshoot after spotting this bright bike, after which our eyes adjusted to spotting all things yellow in the vicinity. That’s what yellow does, it draws attention, demands action.
Balancing yellow with neutrals or other softer colours is the key to wearing it well. In other words, be mellow about it; unless of course you love it, in which case, go all yellow and forget about being mellow! Be the sunshine and have fun with it; it’s what fashion intends.
