Seek to Serve

Find a way to serve, and you’ll have found happiness ~ Helena Grey. I’m not sure how I came to this realization. It must be something I read that triggered this quote. Yet the more I think about it, while this concept might be new to me, it has been extolled from many a pews –I just happened to miss it until now. I guess sometimes we have to learn some things in our own time when we are ready to do so.

My younger sister started a YouTube channel titled Chris plus Joe. Her motivation was to help others with all the information she had gathered, as others who had shared their experiences before her had helped her too. She felt it would be selfish to not share her findings too. She wanted to help. She wanted to be give back to a community that she felt had poured into her life. She wanted to be of service. Find a way to serve and you’ll have found happiness.

My youngest sister Terry started an international organization to serve others overcome what she had had to overcome all by herself without help. She didn’t want anyone else to go through the same, so she poured money into a home to help others that would find themselves on the lonesome path she had been on all those many years ago. She didn’t want anyone else to ever have to go it alone. She wanted to be of service. Find a way to serve and you’ll have found happiness.

We’ve heard it said ‘be to the youth the person you needed when you were young’. Gandhi told us to ‘be the change we wish to see’. If you want a friend, be a friend first. Be who you need. Be what you need. In getting back into fashion and design, I have needed good quality products, and so I have to make good quality products. I have needed to understand the marketplace’s highs and lows, so I educate on that which I’m learning so we can all benefit. I want to be of service. Find a way to serve and you’ll have found happiness.

‘The heart of human excellence often begins to beat when you discover a pursuit that gives you a sense of meaning, joy or passion’ says Terry Orlick. A life of service gives us a sense of meaning, a sort of direction without which nothing would make sense. Turn your sorrow into joy by sharing your story. Step out of your misery by uplifting another. Succeed by helping someone else. ‘It is easier to reach our potential when we learn the value of including others in our quest’ writes John Wooden.

Everything we need to arise as a people, first for ourselves then for others, is within us. To quote Lao Tzu, ‘When you realize nothing is lacking, the whole world belongs to you’. Nothing is lacking dear friends. If you feel lack, be the very thing you feel is lacking -seek to serve. If you want to complain about what’s missing, instead seek to fill the gap. Be the one that seeks to serve and to give more than you receive, for therein lies the very meaning of sharing the living experience.

I recently listened to an interview by Zakarie Ali, the first Somali male model in Helsinki Finland, and the statement he made resonated with mine, ‘In my job, I don’t save lives or put out fires, but as long as I can do some good, it’s good enough’. And what a noble stance! Seek to be of service. If you find a way to serve, you’ll have found happiness. Cheers, Grey ღ
